How much do I have to pay to my nanny?

    Nanny salary

This is a common question that we are asked, and this is because we know a nanny could be a huge relief for your family. It would save you the time and effort of having to do household duties, and give you peace of mind that your children are well taken care of when you’re not with them. But, how much does this cost?

Caregivers, even caregivers that live in the home, are not on-demand childcare superheroes. They’re employees of your family. And just as other employees have defined working schedules, compensation schemes for overtime, and the right to private spaces and personal time to unwind, so do caregivers.

A local nanny living in Quebec earns the market price of around $20-$22 per hour. On the other hand, a foreign live-in nanny receives a minimum salary of $13.50 per hour.

But how much does it cost in total to the employer? Let’s take a look at an example from a live-in nanny in Quebec:

    Salary: $13.50/hour
    Working Hours: 40/week
Payment Schedule: Paid every two weeks
    Gross pay: $13.50/hour * 40 hours/week * 2 weeks = $1,080

Taxes Deducted (Federal, provincial, employee contributions to CPP and EI) = $191.61

Net Pay (what the nanny takes home in a 2-week period): $888.39

    Cost to the employer

    Quebec pension plan $55.78
    Employment insurance premium $17.84
    Quebec parental insurance plan $7.47
Contribution to the health services fund $17.82
    Subtotal $98.91
    CNT at 0.07% of $1,080 $0.76
    Vacation (4% of $1,080) $43.20
    Subtotal $43.96
    Total $142.86

Total Cost to Employer: $1,080 + $142.86 = $1,222.86 (gross salary + cost to the employer)

Of course, this will vary by province and employee, and if the employee chooses to live with your family, but it would be reasonable to expect the overall yearly cost to you of hiring a nanny to be approximately $31,795 ($1,223 per two-week period * 26 two-week periods per year).
