Two terms to know

What decides what is available in your region, explained simply.

What is the TFWP?
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), home care stream, lets a family welcome a live-in nanny from abroad when local workers are scarce. The full process usually takes 8 to 9 months, and the nanny’s wage starts at $19/hr ($19.27/hr for senior care). It is fully open in most regions of Quebec.
What is the medical exception?
In a few cities close to major centres, hiring live-in help from abroad is normally restricted. For a senior losing autonomy or a child with documented special needs, a medical exception still allows it, with a doctor’s note. See senior care and special-needs care.
