Frequently asked questions
The honest answers — PTET, costs, timelines, and regions.
What is the PTET and how does it work?
The PTET (Temporary Foreign Worker Program) lets a Quebec family hire an international live-in nanny or caregiver. Regency's in-house legal team handles the LMIA application and the work permit for you. The full process takes 8 to 9 months from start to arrival, and the caregiver's salary starts at $19/hr.
What is the "medical exception"?
Normally, international live-in placements via PTET are limited to regions outside Greater Montréal. But if a family member has a medical condition, a disability, a chronic illness, or a child with special needs, the medical exception unlocks PTET live-in access everywhere in Quebec — including Montréal, Laval, Brossard and Gatineau.
What is an LMIA?
An LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is the government authorization that allows a family to hire a foreign caregiver — it confirms there is a genuine need for the position. Regency prepares and submits it for you; it's part of our in-house legal service.
Live-in, live-out, au pair — what's the difference?
A live-out nanny is a local professional who works at your home on a set schedule and goes home after. A live-in nanny lives with your family — an international caregiver, hired via the PTET. An au pair is a young European who joins your family for cultural exchange, through the IEC program. We help you figure out which one fits your family best.
How much does it cost?
The caregiver's wage depends on the service and region — for example, from $19/hr for an international live-in nanny, and from $19.27/hr for an elderly caregiver. Regency's placement fee varies with your situation; we give you a clear, transparent quote during your free consultation, with no surprises.
How long does a placement take?
A local live-out nanny can be placed within days to a few weeks. An international live-in placement via PTET takes 8 to 9 months in total, because it includes the LMIA, the work permit, and the immigration paperwork. We keep you informed at every step.
Which regions do you serve?
All of Quebec. Local live-out nannies and au pairs across the greater Montréal area; international live-in nannies and caregivers in regions outside greater Montréal — and everywhere in Quebec when the medical exception applies.
Do you handle the legal paperwork?
Yes — entirely. Regency is the only Quebec agency led by an immigration lawyer, with a full legal team in-house. We handle the LMIA, the work permit, and the permanent residency path from start to finish.
